Chihuahuas And Tracheal Collapse

Chihuahuas are tiny dogs, and their windpipes are tiny too. If your Chihuahua has started honking, gagging, or coughing when excited, tracheal collapse is one of the things your vet may want to look at. Here is what is known about the condition in this breed and what helps at home.

Chihuahuas In The Research

The American College of Veterinary Surgeons, VCA Animal Hospitals, and University of Missouri Veterinary Health Center all list Chihuahuas among the breeds most often affected. In an earlier Seoul National University review of 99 dogs, 8 dogs, about 8 percent, were Chihuahuas. In a 2024 Seoul National University study of 110 small dogs, Chihuahuas were the fourth most common breed with 8 dogs. And a study of 329 dogs with a long-lasting cough at an English specialty hospital found that Chihuahuas, along with Pomeranians and Yorkshire Terriers, were over-represented among dogs whose cough came from airway collapse.

Why Small Size Matters

Two studies point to body size. In the English study of 329 coughing dogs, lower body weight raised the odds that the cause was airway collapse. In the 110-dog study, lower body weight was linked to more severe collapse in every part of the trachea the researchers measured. That does not mean every tiny dog will be affected. It does mean a Chihuahua with a lasting cough deserves a closer look rather than a "wait and see."

Where The Collapse Was Found

In the 110-dog study, all 8 Chihuahuas had collapse where the trachea enters the chest, inside the chest, and where it divides into the bronchi. Five of the 8 also had collapse in the neck. Only 2 of the 8, 25 percent, had collapse of a main bronchus, the lowest rate of any breed in that study. With only 8 dogs, that is a small group, so it is a clue rather than a rule. Your own dog's imaging is what counts.

Signs To Watch For

Many Chihuahuas are carried a lot. If yours is, notice whether being scooped up under the chest or neck sets off the cough, and try supporting the body from underneath instead.

Difficulty breathing, gums or tongue turning blue, or fainting is a respiratory emergency, according to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. Get veterinary care immediately.

Other Problems That Can Look Similar

A cough in a small older dog is not always the trachea. VCA Animal Hospitals notes that heart disease must be ruled out, and that heart disease and tracheal collapse are sometimes present at the same time. Your vet may suggest chest X-rays or heart tests to sort it out. See Honking Cough Or Heart Disease?

Getting Help

Most dogs do well with medicine and home care. If your Chihuahua keeps struggling despite treatment, ask your vet whether fluoroscopy or a scope would help, and whether a specialist visit makes sense. Find A Practice shows listed practices near you that say they treat tracheal collapse.
